only girls who save their pennies…money pot makeover

When we moved to Pembs, I sent a load of our stuff off to the charity shops. I nearly sent this money pot, because, well, it just isn’t really my bag. But it was a gift, and I do use it, so it felt a bit rude to part with it so soon, even if it DID have modified lyrics to Material Girl plastered across it’s hot pink exterior in black glitter…

I spied some mini paint pots for a bargainous £1 each whilst strimmer shopping earlier this week and the colours were just perfect for my seaside theme. So my little pot got pimped as we sat out in the garden enjoying the fresh evening sunshine, whilst Chris strimmed and the scintillating sweet smell of freshly cut grass wafted through the air.

It was very easy. I sanded the rough, glittery surface down and wiped with a damp cloth before applying two coats of the darker ‘pure sea’ colour (I left a day between each coat). I then painted fat, messy stripes using the lighter ‘infinity sky’ colour, tied round a bit of twine, and Bob’s your uncle! The paintbrush I used was a cheap, ancient one, and it left a grainy, textured finish that pleased me no end.

To finish off, I tied a bit of garden twine (that stuff is so fantastic, I have had one roll for about 3 years and use it for everything – it is even serving as curtain tiebacks at the moment!) around the rim of the pot. Perfecto.

It looks quite splendid next to my small beach-finds collection.

Parker looked on in bemusement as usual, attempting to climb on my knee and ‘paw’ the pot at regular intervals during the painting process. Helpful.

We even had an appearance from the ever elusive Blue with his little hanging down cat belly…

…but Parker quickly chased him off – he doesn’t like sharing the limelight. Poor Blue.

As my pot sat drying in the breeze, I raged war on the ever increasing slug army that seems to populate our garden. Organic slug pellets were liberally applied, carpeting the lawn from green to blue. I hope it puts them at bay a little, they’ve even started coming in the house! Ew. It’s all fun in the countryside :)
